Time to Step Up

The silver lining in the gray cloud of doom over the recent the elections was the hope that Republicans on the Hill would remove their heads from their nether regions and return to their conservative roots. As I read the growing list of dire predictions leading up to the election and then watched in despair as race after race went to the Democrats Tuesday, I kept praying that this will actually be for the best. Surely Republicans will see that abandoning your base doesn’t pay off in the end. No amount of John McCaining it to the middle will get liberals and most Democrats to vote for you and it just pisses off your main base of support. You can’t swing the middle-of-the-road voters your direction without the donations and time of conservative volunteers.

Unfortunately, my hopes were immediately dashed during President Bush’s press conference on Wednesday. No, I don’t mean the “resignation” of Rumsfield. I was completely disheartened by his comments on immigration. He mentioned this issue as one plus to having a Democratic Congress. Hmmm. Does that though that to get this plan passed requires a Democratic majority not ring a bell of alarm in the President’s head? Hello! Calling President Bush’s brain: If you’ve got Nancy Pelosi’s support on something, you might want to rethink your position.

I just don’t get it. Why do Bush and other Republican leaders support illegal immigration? WHY? I realize they get money from businesses who support the guest worker program and want cheap labor, but I just hate that it boils down to money. Conservatives are supposed to stand for principles. We’re supposed to be better than that. It’s extremely frustrating that an amnesty program will most likely be passed now. What will does it say about us that we let people break our laws, then reward them by giving them social services at the expense of law-abiding citizens?! My prayer now is that enough conservatives will be angry enough to donate money and time to grassroots efforts to defeat any form of amnesty. It’s time to fight for our country. We are being invaded and will lose this war if something is not done. If you feel the same way, please consider donating to an organization such as the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) and searching for ways to get involved in your area.
